Job Description

Background

Doctors with Africa CUAMM is an international NGO, based in Italy, established in 1950 with the aim of supporting developing countries in their effort to build sustainable and accessible health systems. The organization’s mission is to reduce the needless loss of lives in development and emergency contexts caused by a lack of effective health care and to contribute to improving health outcomes among the most vulnerable group of the population. CUAMM, in collaboration with Regional Health Bureau, South Omo Zone Health Department, Jinka General Hospital, and Turmi Health Center is implementing within the initiative “The first 1000 days” the project entitled “Ensuring access to quality health services for mothers and children in the South Omo Zone” with the primary aim of improving the accessibility of maternal, perinatal, neonatal and pediatric services provided in the intervention area targeting health facilities and communities.

Specific Responsibilities

Clinical work: Supporting Turmi HC in providing the following services:

  • FANC, PNC, delivery services, women services.
  • Assisting Senior staff in management, and assistance of cesarean section (pre and post) and management of obstetric, neonatal, and pediatric complications.
  • OPD U5, EPI, and nutritional services for newborns, U5, and PLW.

Overseeing of Early Childhood Development (ECD) activities in the health center

  • Ensure integration of ECD interventions into routine MNCH services at the health facility.
  • Coordinate regular ECD sessions at the health facility, including displaying IEC materials.

Support and mentor the health facility staff collaborating in the achievement of expected quality results

  • Ensure and facilitate the practical implementation of the knowledge acquired during training.
  • Training on the job.
  • Support the establishment/strengthening of quality MNCH services as agreed. standards and national guidelines.

Coordination and Supervision of HEWs and Community activities:

  • Collaborate with the facility staff and other stakeholders to elaborate a quarterly plan of outreaches, awareness, IEC sessions.
  • Coordinate Outreach, awareness, and IEC sessions as per the agreed plan.
  • Ensure the integration of Early Childhood Development (ECD) services in routine outreach activities.
  • Ensure implementation of quality service at the community level.
  • Supervise and mentor, together with the designed facility staff, the HEWs, and HDAs.
  • Ensure and monitor effective links from the community /HEWs to the Health facility.

Provide Monthly Report:

  • Ensure collaboration with facility staff in order to produce quality and appropriate monthly data collection and HIMS reporting at the facility level.
  • Ensure monthly internal reports as per NGO reporting System. Compilation of weekly outreach activity reports.
  • Monitor the referral system providing relevant information and data as per the agreed protocol.
  • Participate in meetings and orientation training called by South Omo Zone Health Department, Woreda Health Office, Health Center, and Doctors with Africa CUAMM.
  • Participate in Integrated Supportive Supervision whenever requested.
  • Any additional assignment, according to the position, is given by the Project Manager or Country Manager.

Duty Station: Turmi Health Center (CEmONC Center), South Omo Zone, SNNPR Region, with 70% of the work hours in the field.

Type of Employment: seven (7) months (60 days probation period) Salary: as per the organization salary scale.

Reports to: Project Manager 

Job Requirements

  • Required Education & Experience: The candidate must hold a BSc Degree in Midwifery with a preferable one-year field experience as BSc Midwife at the health facility, hospital, or community level
  • Overall responsibilities of the Position: The BSC Midwife will be responsible for implementing specific activities related to the MNCH Service Delivery

Required Competencies:

  • Strong clinical experience in midwifery including MDOC management
  • Must have passed the COC exam and hold a professional license
  • Fluent in speaking English and Amharic
  • Experience in midwifery and nursing including pediatric and neonatal services
  • Experience in management of nutritional services for newborn, U5 and PLW
  • Relevant experience in training and mentoring of health professionals
  • Relevant experience in monitoring and supervision of MNCH Services
  • Previous experience in MNCH activities at the community level
  • Previous work experience with NGOs will be preferred
  • Previous work experience in South Omo Zone or in one of the woredas in the zone, and knowledge of the culture of the community in the area is highly advantageous
  • Excellent organizational skills and multi-tasking ability
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Strong communication, presentation, and public speaking
  • Strong interpersonal, motivational, networking, and public relations skills
  • Positive coordination and relationship with local health authorities, partners, and other CUAMM staff
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to succeed
