Job Description

Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) has been working in Ethiopia since 1984. Its initial intervention was predominantly focused on famine relief through the provision of emergency health service assistance to people affected by famine. CPAR’s major humanitarian and emergency interventions were a supply of skilled personnel, medical supplies and materials for an emergency, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and health services.

CPAR is now implementing a project entitled “Enhancing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights for Women and Adolescents” (ESWA). The project aims to improve women and adolescent girls' reproductive, and sexual health and rights by increasing awareness of and access to high-quality gender-responsive and youth-friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in selected zones in the Amhara and the Oromia Regional States. This project is funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). CPAR is implementing the project in collaboration with various universities and local partners. For this project, CPAR is seeking qualified candidates for Obstetric Fistula Consultant.

Principal Function: The consultant provides expertise to the project on all aspects of Obstetric Fistula. Ensure staff are trained on OF, its causes, impacts on women and treatment options. Conduct training of trainers on how to identify cases of OF in the communities. Provide input to monitoring and evaluation of OF related activities. Provide routine capacity building to all staff and stakeholders as needed throughout the project period. Under the overall supervision of the project manager, the OF consultant will assists in the coordination, planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of obstetric fistula programs

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports establishment and functioning of a National/Regional Obstetric Fistula Task Force, with multi-sectoral membership (e.g. government, donors, civil society, private sectors) and clear terms of reference;
  • Works with the National/Regional Obstetric Fistula Task Force to develop and implement a National Obstetric Fistula Strategy that will aim to reduce the incidence of obstetric fistula; reduce the prevalence of obstetric fistula; and facilitate reintegration and empowerment of cases into society;
  • Forges partnerships and secure documented commitment of key stakeholders (line government institutions, NGOs and health professionals) to prevent and minimize obstetric fistula in Ethiopia
  • Supports through the development of centers of excellence for fistula, and ensure adequate supplies and equipment are available for fistula treatment in designated treatment centers;
  • Develops and implements training plan for health workers on obstetric fistula prevention, including promotion of Partograph and catheterization, treatment and psychosocial counseling and support;
  • Develops and monitors implementation of a communication plan to guide advocacy and behavior change communication (BCC) activities for obstetric fistula for project communities;
  • Coordinates Country Office mobilization efforts for fistula campaigns, including media engagements, community sensitization, fistula ambassadors and strengthening the registration system for identification and referral for treatment;
  • Works with government and development partners to develop standards and packages for social reintegration services and implement key interventions to improve post-surgery care and reintegration plan for fistula survivors;
  • Reviews various obstetric fistula management tools and develop tools for data collection
  • Facilitates collection of information and data on obstetric fistula and other relevant activities, analyzes for monitoring and evaluation purposes;
  • Maintains regular contacts with institutions which conduct programs on fistula and coordinates CPAR fistula related activities with them;
  • Documents Country Office achievements, best practices and lessons learnt for purposes of increasing awareness/ visibility of Country Office fistula work and share local experiences globally;
  • Undertakes other tasks that may be assigned by CPAR in connection with the fulfillment of the above responsibilities.

Place of work: Addis Ababa With frequent travel to project sites. 

Job Requirements

Required skills and experience

Education:

  • A medical doctor with the specialty in Gynecology or/and Surgery;
  • A Master’s degree in Integrated Emergency Surgical Officers (IESO) with Health system strengthening/management will be an added advantage;

Experience:

  • At least 5 years professional experience preferably having exposure to OF case identification and management;
  • Computer skills: proficiency in current office software applications.

Languages:                                    

  • Fluency in oral and written English;
  • Amharic and Oromifa knowledge is an added advantage.
