Job Description

Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) has been working in Ethiopia since 1984. Its initial intervention was predominantly focused on famine relief through the provision of emergency health service assistance to people affected by famine. CPAR’s major humanitarian and emergency interventions were a supply of skilled personnel, medical supplies and materials for emergency, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and health services.

CPAR is now implementing a project entitled “Enhancing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights for Women and Adolescents” (ESWA). The project aims to improve women and adolescent girls reproductive, sexual health and rights by increasing awareness of and access to high quality gender-responsive and youth-friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in selected zones in the Amhara and Oromia Regional States. This project is funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). CPAR is implementing the project in collaboration with various universities and local partners. For this project, CPAR is seeking qualified candidates for Field office Gender Officer.

Principal Function: The Gender Officer position supports the integration of a gender perspective into the ESWA project work to ensure that gender is mainstreamed and strengthened. The position supports the project by helping to develop and implement appropriate strategies to ensure the effective delivery of project goals and the genuine advocacy of gender in relation to sexual and reproductive health. .

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and advice to the project field team on technical issues of Advocacy and Gender mainstreaming in the project.
  • Network and maintain dialogue with relevant stakeholders e.g. Government Institutions, community leaders, and religious leaders to ensure collaboration, synergy and sharing of experiences on gender issues.
  • Lead assessment and research activities at the community level to gather information and analysis on gender and advocacy issues.
  • Develop a strategy to develop awareness among staff and partner communities on how to lead the documentation and sharing of lessons on advocacy and gender best practices in collaboration with the senior gender officer and project site coordinator.
  • Lead training workshops for relevant stakeholders, staff and community leaders, boys, girls and women on advocacy and gender related topics.
  • Support the preparation and dissemination of information related to gender issues that are relevant to women, adolescents, and youth.
  • Support the monitoring, evaluation and reporting on gender mainstreaming by ensuring the collection of relevant baseline information and formulation of indicators that are sensitive to gender.
  • Facilitate and mange community conversations with the community and religious leaders
  • Identifying training needs and organize trainings in gender mainstreaming and transforming.
  • Prepare project implementation plans, budgets and carry out proper implementation of the project pertinent to the responsibility
  • Prepare periodical and annual reports
  • Write case studies and document lessons learnt using all possible communication outlets.
  • Prepare training materials, proceedings, posters, etc. as deemed necessary.
  • Take part in the development of project proposals and concept note development
  • Perform other related duties as required

Job Requirements

Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation, Public health, Gender or related fields with a health-related undergraduate degree.
  • Five years work experience in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating health projects
  • Well acquainted with the Ethiopian health system, policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Takes initiative and is goal-oriented
  • Experience in Results-Based Management
  • Working experience in non-governmental organizations is advantageous.
  • Good communication and writing skills are adaptable, flexible, and resourceful, able to adopt an organized and methodological approach, sense of confidentiality.
  • Proven skills, in monitoring and evaluation system design, drafting, and preparing reports.
  • A strong aptitude for organizational change, innovation, learning, team building,
  • Languages – Fluent in writing and spoken English.
